All women, listen up!!!
Let me introduce you to a herb ruled by Jupiter, dedicated to the element air and blessed with an action oriented masculine duality that allows it to expand, support, balance, and complement the feminine in a way no other plant can.
Since ancient times, there exists a truly Magickal herb that has been nicknamed the ´Healer´.
Not only is it used as medicine to cure a wide range of physical ailments but it’s also known as the plant that brings wisdom, protection from negative energies, longevity, and even immortality.
Here is to pure magic, healing, and the power to restore balance and harmony in every aspect of your being.
Sage (salvia officinalis) derives its name from latin salvere or ‘to heal’ – and it has earned that name honestly.
We all know that (especially white) sage is used to smudge and purify spaces, sacred tools, and the soul itself to protect from the influence of bad energies and clean the spirit and mind of any negativity coming from the outside as well as from the inside promoting calm and tranquility.
The reason this plant is such a powerful protector and purifier is due to its unique and unprecedented power to bring balance to anything that is out of balance.
Wherever there is balance, there cannot be negativity or illness.
- If you’re healthy, your body is in balance.
- If you’re confident, know what you want, and take appropriate action to achieve success, your mind is in balance.
- If you feel calm and happy, your spirit is in balance.
- If you have all three and manage to align your balanced body, mind, and spirit to act as one, you are walking in your purpose.
As above so below – Sage balances a woman’s spirit as well as her body
If we accept that anything that is manifested as a physical phenomena which can be perceived with our 5 senses (vision, hearing, smell, and touch) has to first occur in the spiritual or energetic realm, we can appreciate the extraordinary power this herb has in regulating and balancing everything from hormones to digestive functions, mood, and anything in between.
If we also accept that the root of any illness or malfunction, be that physical or mental, is an imbalance somewhere in our body, we can directly link the balancing and purifying Magickal properties of the sage plant used in rituals and spiritual practices to its medicinal use to cure the body and restore the balance of our hormonal, digestive, and even circulatory functions.
What makes sage the best friend and Ally of any woman?
Sage is a plant known for its intimate relationship with women because of its regulatory capacity on menstruation and menopause. Sage is there to help with any issue specifically related to the female body.
From alleviating menstrual cramps to regulating the menstruation cycle length and amount of bleeding – up to promoting fertility and at the later stages of a woman’s life, helping with the profound changes menopause brings, this herb has been accompanying women across all cultures for as long as we exist.
Just think about the dire consequences an out of balance endocrine system has for a woman. It doesn’t just affect her mood. Suffering from pain, excessive bleeding, or the uncertainty an irregular cycle brings with it at that certain time of the month is something only a woman can understand.
Even worse, if her hormones are so out of balance that it affects her fertility, she will inevitably feel less than, as if there was a part of her missing and she cannot feel whole and happy within her feminine energy.
At this point, it’s not just a matter of discomfort, it’s a matter of identity.
How exactly does Sage support women on their quest of settling into their own feminine balance?
Due to the presence of substances that sage possesses – called phytosterols – the plant promotes hormonal rebalancing which we already identified as one of the most important bodily functions of the female body.
Phytosterols are steroid compounds naturally occurring in plants that cannot be made by humans or animals which means they have to be consumed in the diet. They have a similar structure to cholesterol and therefore have significant effects on cholesterol levels as well as hormones. I´m leaving you here with a study published by the National Library of Medicine on phystosterols and cholesterol: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5729784/
Here is a list of what sage does for us women specifically on a medicinal level. And mind you, this is not pulled out of thin air by some crazy herb witches, there are scientific studies that prove the claims which I have included as links:
- Sage helps regulate menstrual flow and irregularities, and relieve symptoms like cramps:
Sage is well known for its antispasmodic and analgesic properties which brings relief to menstrual cramps
Sage is an emmenagogue – it promotes menstruation when it is delayed, scanty or completely absent.
Emmenagogues are herbs which stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus; some of them (like sage for example) stimulate menstruation. Emmenagogues are used to stimulate menstrual flow, when menstruation is absent for reasons such as hormonal disorders or conditions.
- Sage acts as an uterine stimulant
This promotes menstrual flow and prevents irregularities, therefore it is NOT recommended during pregnancy unless you use it in the last few weeks to help with labor in a healthy pregnancy with no complications.
- Studies have shown that sage extracts can even be effective as infertility treatment by supporting ovary function.
According to this study published by the Journal of King Saud University, Saudi Arabia is 100% on point with their tradition of giving daily Salvia Officinalis infusions to women suffering from reproductive issues.
- Age eases the dreaded symptoms of menopause.
Because of natural phytoestrogens present in sage, infusions of this herb can reduce night sweats, hot flashes and excessive salivation during (pre)menopause.
These phytoestrogens in plants have been shown to be very effective as an alternative hormonal replacement therapy because upon consumption, they are converted into a substance very similar to estrogen which makes sage the best friend of any postmenopausal women.
- Sage helps regulate mood.
This plant´s extraordinary power to balance hormones also goes for the infamous stress hormone cortisol. Sage extract reduces cortisol levels which results in feeling less stressed and reducing symptoms of depression by up to 36% according to this study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24802524/
Please do not be fooled into thinking that sage is just a plant and therefore can do no harm. Far from it. This plant is so powerful, you should never use it without medical advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any type of hormonal, diabetes, or other medical treatment!!!
How to use sage and make this Magickal herb your best friend
Although if used as hormonal treatment, it’s necessary to consume large amounts of the active components contained within the sage herb which needs to be done under medical supervision, you can use this Magickal herb in many ways at home to help you get in touch with your femininity and also ease the the many symptoms and discomforts that follow us women throughout our lives.
